A permalink (also called a stable link, durable link, persistent link or permanent link) is a web address that consistently points to a specific information source such as an ebook or article. Unlike regular URLs in your browser's address bar, permalinks remain stable and functional over time. 

If you use electronic resources available through the library discovery tool OneSearch, it's important to remember to use the permalink provided in the item record when you need to link to these resources from Canvas for students to access. 

Permalinks help track usage statistics, which the library uses to make informed decisions about which resources to purchase or maintain. When you use permalinks, the library can collect usage data (without tracking personal information) to determine which resources are being used and should remain in the collection.

Permalinks also ensure consistent access to resources for your students. 

To locate the permalink for a resource in OneSearch

1. Perform your search in OneSearch

2. Click on an item in your results to view its details

3. Look for the permalink icon

4. Click this icon to view the permalink

5. Copy the permalink and paste into the location where you will share with your students

Where should I share permalinks?

You can share permalinks in:

• Your leaning management system (Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, etc.)
• Course syllabi
• Reading lists
• Email communications with students
